Abstract:
Experimental investigations concerning the viscous flow about the bare hull of an airship at angle of attack will be presented. In particular, the velocity field as well as static pressure in planes perpendicular to the onset flow direction will be considered and related to flow visualizations obtained under comparable conditions. The experiments were conducted in an open-jet wind tunnel by utilizing a seven hole probe fixed to a traversing scale. After discussing the basic principles of multi-hole probe operation, the experimental setup will be shown. Experimental data at angles of attack a =10°, 20°, 30° and axial positions x/l=0.6, 0.8 ... 1.4 will be presented. The development of a free shear layer resulting in distinct single vortices at each side of the symmetry plane will be studied.
