Stuttgarter Profilkatalog I and II
The 'Stuttgarter Profilkatalog I and II' comprise wind tunnel tests in
the Laminar Wind Tunnel of the 'Institut für Aerodynamik' (IAG) of the
University Stuttgart.
They include the well known FX-airfoils designed by the late Prof. Dr. F.X.
Wortmannt
as well as tests of several other airfoils which are available to the public.
The text is in German and in English language.
The 'Stuttgarter Profilkatalog' I by Dieter Althaus and Franz Xaver Wortmann was published in 1972 by the IAG and in 1981 by Vieweg&Sohn Braunschweig.
The 'Stuttgarter Profilkatalog II: Niedriggeschwindigkeitsprofile' by
Dieter Althaus was published in 1996 by Vieweg&Sohn Braunschweig.
Both catalogs are now out of print.
The catalogs contain a description of the Laminar Wind Tunnel and its
instrumentation, the coordinates, contours, pressure distributions of the
airfoils, together with the wind tunnel test results on two-dimensional wing
sections at Mach numbers below 0.25 and Reynolds numbers between 0.25 and 4.0
Million which are presented in polar diagrams.
Results of tests ordered by industry are not published.
The airfoils tested comprehend cambered airfoils without flaps, cambered
airfoils for use on Wind Turbines, airfoils designed and tested especially for
use with a flap of given chord and hinge position, symmetrical airfoils with
flaps, airfoils subsequently fitted with a flap for use as aileron. Airfoils of
foreign design, special airfoils with extractable flaps, measurements of special
configurations as spoilers, gurney flaps, trailing edge thickness, roughness
etc. are presented as well as tests on cut trailing edges.
Up to 1996 the 'Stuttgarter Profilkatalog I' was only available in printed form. Then, the institute digitized the catalog and stored most of the airfoil polars together with the airfoil coordinates in ASCII files. It was published as 'Extract from the Stuttgarter Profilkatalog I' (Contents)
The coordinates and aerodynamic data for the airfoils and tests in 'Stuttgarter Profilkatalog II' are tabulated as ASCII files. (Contents)
These three books have now been copied as PDF-files and are made available together with the ASCII files on a CD-ROM by the
