Background

On January 1, 2023, the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) established ten centers of excellence to support research and innovation activities for the development and adaptation of HPC applications for the exascale and post-exascale era. Within these centers of excellence, existing simulation software will be further developed for the exascale era. Adaptation to exascale HPC systems will require significant changes to existing applications. This is to ensure that they are available on future exascale HPC systems for European research and industry and to meet current scientific, industrial and societal challenges.

One of the ten centers of excellence is the Center of Excellence for Exascale CFD (CEEC). This is a consortium of nine European universities and addresses topics in engineering, aeronautics and atmospheric boundary layers. These topics are represented by six lighthouse projects on the example of the interaction between shock and boundary layer and the buffet on airfoils at the edge of the flight envelope, the aeroelastic simulation of airfoils, the topology optimization of static mixers, the local erosion of an offshore wind turbine foundation, the simulation of atmospheric boundary layer flows and the hull of merchant ships at model scale. The software used will be further developed with regard to the simulation of these lighthouse projects on Exascale HPC systems.

Problem definition

Within the Center of Excellence CEEC, the CFD flow solver FLEXI, based on a Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method, developed at the IAG, in the group of Prof. Andrea Beck, is used among others. This CFD solver is currently used efficiently on CPU-based HPC systems. As we move into the exascale era, HPC system architectures are increasingly transforming towards systems with additional accelerators such as GPUs. This project aims to further develop the DG code's algorithmic to make efficient use of the additional computational resources provided by accelerators. This includes, among other things, an optimization of the underlying data structure adapted for the use of accelerators.
The computational resources made available by this enables the numerical treatment of the lighthouse project handled at the IAG of the shock boundary layer interaction and the transonic buffet of airfoils. Here, it is possible to utilize the long-term experience in the simulation of airfoil flow within the working group.
Working in the center of excellence CEEC provides the opportunity to collaborate with leading European researchers from five different countries and contribute to algorithmic development driven by problem-specific applications. This is supported by regular discussions and two face-to-face meetings per year. There will be opportunities to actively participate in the dissemination of project results at various conferences and events. Have we aroused your interest?

The University of Stuttgart would like to increase the proportion of women in the scientific field and is therefore particularly interested in applications from women. Full-time positions are generally divisible. Severely disabled persons are given priority in the case of equal suitability. The recruitment of academic staff is carried out by the Central Administration.
