The Institute of Aerodynamics and Gas Dynamics welcomes Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Schäferlein as the new holder of the professorship for Aerodynamics of Aircraft and Spacecraft.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Schäferlein succeeds Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ewald Krämer, who retired on March 31, 2025.
After studying aerospace engineering at the University of Stuttgart, Prof. Schäferlein earned his doctorate at the IAG in 2018 with a thesis on multiphysical phenomena of helicopters using higher-order numerical methods. He subsequently gained extensive experience in industrial research and development of eVTOL aircraft at the manufacturer Volocopter. As Head of Flight Physics, he was responsible for the entire process from conceptual design through EASA type certification for the multidisciplinary domain.
The research focus of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Schäferlein lies in the experimental and numerical analysis of aerodynamic phenomena of novel aircraft configurations with distributed propulsion as well as classical rotary-wing aircraft, with particular emphasis on the interaction of multiple physical domains.
We wish Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Schäferlein every success and all the best in his new role.
