The Dorothea-Erxleben visiting professorship supports the careers of female researchers and scientists in academia.

Dr. Andrea Beck of IAG has been awarded the Dorothea-Erxleben visiting associate professorship at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg. She studied aerospace engineering at the University of Stuttgart and the Georgia Institute of Technology and has been a member of the Numerics Research Group of Prof. C.-D Munz since 2009. Since 2015, she has focused on the numerical simulation of turbulent flows and has coordinated the research efforts in that area. She will continue and extend this work at the Institute of Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics in Magdeburg, but will stay connected to the IAG – both in terms of research as well as teaching.

The Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg established the Dorothea-Erxleben-Professorship in 1997/98. Since then, it has helped excellent early career female scientist to develop and sharpen their professional and personal profile. The professorship is named after Dorothea Erxleben, who was the first woman to obtain a medical doctorate in 1754.
