Shallow Water Channel

Institute of Aerodynamics and Gas Dynamics

The Shallow Water Channel is exclusively used for graduate laboratories. It enables descriptive visualizations of certain phenomena in gas dynamics, such as Mach lines or shock waves.

The planar, compressible gas flow around a body or through a nozzle can be modelled by shallow water flows. In this facility, we demonstrate effects in the subsonic, near sonic and supersonic flow regime to our students.
