Based on a sound record in the development and testing of natural laminar flow (NLF) airfoil section, the focus of the working group is put on the impact of unsteady inflow conditions on laminar boundary layer stability and transition. This includes the development of novel measurement procedures as well as improvements of transition prediction tools.

The working group Boundary Layers deals with numerical simulation, representation and interpretation of flow processes close to walls in the field of fundamental research.

Wind Energy
Wind Energy
The focus of the working group is on numerical studies on the influence of atmospheric inflow and complex terrain orographies on transient loads, deformations and noise emissions of wind turbines. The findings are used in the development of passive and active measures for load and noise control.

Transition and Turbulence
The working group Transition and Turbulence carries out numerical fundamental investigations mainly on flow phenomena in 3D and supersonic boundary layers.

Helicopters and Aeroacoustics
Helicopters and Aeroacoustics
The working group Helicopters and Aeroacoustics deals mainly with the simulation of helicopters and propellers. The aim is to reproduce these systems as realistically as possible in high fidelity simulations, especially concerning aerodynamic effects as well as aeroacoustics.

Aircraft Aerodynamics
The focus of the working group is the CFD-based analysis of complex flow phenomena and interactions on aircraft. This includes the study of massively detached flows as well as the control of separation and shock waves by passive and active control measures.

Numerical Methods
Numerical Methods
The main research topic of the working group under Prof. Beck is the construction of highly accurate numerical methods as well as the implementation and optimization of those methods on high performance computers. The focus is put on the development of high order methods, especially discontinuous Galerkin and the application to fluid dynamics, aeroacustics, plasma physics and multi-phase flows.

Environmental Aerodynamics
Environmental Aerodynamics
In the working group Environmental Aerodynamics, attempts are being made to experimentally simulate the turbulent boundary layer flow of the natural wind by means of special wind tunnels. With these boundary layer wind tunnels, the velocity fields above three-dimensional landscape models are then measured, among other things.

With about 70 employees, the Institute of  Aerodynamics and Gas Dynamics deals with research on fluid mechanics mainly associated with air vehicles and wind turbines. For this purpose, the institute operates various experimental test facilities and applies numerical simulation methods, some of which are developed in-house.
